14/06/2024 – Australian Schooling Overview

On first thoughts the system we assumed would be very similar to New Zealand, this though was not the case. There are a few elements to work through and this blog will work through these points to help you give an insight into the challenges we faced and the reason for School finder Australia.

The Australian School system is made up of Public, Private, faith-based schools and then the variations that these schools bring of learning structures, foundationally based on the Australian Curriculum. Most private schools are also though predominantly founded on faith-based elements and vary from Anglican, Christian

In 2023 Australia had 4,086,998 students were enrolled in 9,629 schools. Most students were enrolled in government schools (64.0%), followed by Faith-based schools (19.7%) and independent schools (16.3%).

The schools are set up either single sex (male or female) and coeducational environments. Single-sex private schools are found in every Australian state, but only New South Wales, South Australia, and Victoria, provide the option of a government single-sex education for families. Single sex is the minority with only 4% of total schools in Australia, with more girls than boys.

Depending on the city there is a varying difference on the quantity of private schools supplying coeducation facilities, with Sydney having certain areas predominantly single sex and preferred for families and generally the most expensive schools which are also seen as the best, This being objective and also these schools are extremely difficult to get access to, once you have navigated the schools.

Though there now is a change where single sex are being converted to coeducational and further schools are reviewing for further rollout.

Private schools in Australia are a business and this can be seen in the structure they provide with all the added support and extra programmes for the school like Music, Languages, student support, class numbers, drama and sporting.

Where to start!
